Pneumatic actuator.

Pneumatic actuator is a system of interconnected devices through which mechanized control of shut-off and control valves (ball valves, gates) is realized. It works due to the energy of compressed air, which drives the structural elements of the device. The required components are a compressor and a pneumatic motor.

The pneumatic drive has found wide application in various fields, such as:

  1. Door opening systems in transport;
  2. Gas production and processing;
  3. Oil industry;
  4. Equipment of water pipes, heat pipelines, gas mains;
  5. Paper industry;
  6. Compressor stations.

Depending on the scope of application, the devices can be additionally equipped with control units, equipment for emergency protection systems.

The design features of pneumatic drives differ depending on the scope of application. There are universal general industrial solutions, equipment adapted to Arctic operating conditions, or devices designed to work in the chemical industry.

The management method implemented by means of equipment significantly reduces labor costs and financial costs of enterprises for repair and maintenance.

The principle of operation is that compressed air is directed to the inlet in the device housing. The resulting pressure drives the piston, which rotates the gear. When air enters another inlet, the piston returns to its initial position and rotates the gear in the opposite direction.

There are several types of devices. There are direct-acting pneumatic drives and with return springs. The former are more versatile and are used in most systems.

The nature of the impact is also important. There are two-position and multi-position pneumatic drives. There is also a difference in the design of the device. There are: piston and diaphragm drives. Both are used for various types of regulating and shut-off pipe fittings.

The pneumatic drive has a number of advantages that distinguish this type of equipment from analogues:

  1. Environmental friendliness. Does not allow leaks into the air or soil;
  2. Fire and explosion safety. This makes it possible to use the devices in mines and for gas production;
  3. The pneumatic actuator works flawlessly in adverse conditions and aggressive environments, which include: extreme temperatures, humidity and dust. Its reliability is significantly higher than hydro and electric drives;
  4. Long service life, which is up to 20 years;
  5. Safety during operation, ease of maintenance;
  6. High efficiency of functioning, which is expressed in high speed of movements;
  7. Resistance to radiomagnetic radiation.

Pneumatic power actuators are more expensive to operate due to efficiency indicators. When they work, there is a high noise level. These are the negative features of the choice of pneumatic drives, which are significantly less compared to the advantages.

When choosing a pneumatic drive, it is necessary to take into account the torque and pressure in the line where the equipment will be used, the design features of the device.
